2023/24 Argentina Corn 35% Harvested

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

The 2023/24 Argentina corn estimate was left unchanged this week at 47.0 million tons and I have a neutral to lower bias going forward.

The corn in Argentina was 35% harvested as of late last week compared to 32.6% last year and 41.5% average. This represents an advance of 5% for the week. Corn is 75-80% harvested in the core areas with 20-40% harvested in southern Argentina and 10-12% harvested in far northern Argentina.

Nationwide corn yield last week was 7,820 kg/ha (124.3 bu/ac), which was down 3.6 bu/ac from the prior week. Yields range from a low of 2,500 kg/ha (39.7 bu/ac) in northern Argentina to a high of 9,950 kg/ha (158.2 bu/ac) in the southern core area. Corn yields should continue to decline as the harvest nears completion in the core areas and moves into areas more impacted by corn leafhoppers and corn stunt disease. The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange left their corn estimate unchanged last week at 46.5 million tons.

The corn was rated 49% poor/very poor, 39% fair, and 12% good/excellent as of late last week. The good/excellent percentage was up 1% compared to the prior week. The soil moisture for the corn was rated 21% short/very short and 70% favorable/optimum. The favorable/optimum percentage was down 3% from the prior week. Below is the Argentina corn rating for June 5, 2024 from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange.
