2026/27 Planting Progress in South America

Brazil corn - Farmers in southern Brazil had planted 17% of their first corn crop as of late last week compared to 12% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 6% for the week.

Brazil soybeans - Brazilian farmers had planted 0.05% of their 2026/27 soybeans as of late last week compared to 0.02% last year. Select areas of Parana and Sao Paulo were allowed to start planting their soybeans on September 1st. There is ample soil moisture in most areas of southern Brazil to start planting. In Mato Grosso, farmers are allowed to start planting soybeans today, September 7th. Mato Grosso has received some scattered showers over the last several days, but most areas of the state remain day. Farmers with irrigation capabilities will start planting immediately, especially if they intend to plant safrinha cotton.

Argentina corn - Corn planting has started in Argentina with 1.5% planted as of late last week. Most of the planting activity is in north-central Santa Fe where 13% of the corn has been planted. Ironically, farmers are still harvesting the 2025/26 corn crop with 92.5% harvested. So, farmers in Argentina are harvesting corn and planting corn at the same time.

Argentina soybeans - Farmers in Argentina generally do not start planting soybeans until the second half of October with planting completed in January.

Argentina sunflowers - The 2026/27 sunflower crop in Argentina was 19.3% planted as of late last week, which represents an advance of 2.6% from the prior week. Farmers are expected to plant 3 million hectares of sunflowers in 2026/27. Most of the sunflower planted thus far have been in northern Argentina.
