Low Soy Yields Expected in Laguna Carapa, Mato Grosso do Sul

In the municipality of Laguna Carapa in southern Mato Grosso do Sul in southern Brazil, farmers are lamenting the prospects of very poor soybean yields. Much of the municipality has been in drought for virtually the entire growing season. In the driest areas, some farmers have only received less than one inch of precipitation during the growing season and the dryness has been accompanied by strong sunlight and high temperatures.
Local agronomists expect that 40% of the soybeans in the municipality will have yields in the range of 45-50 sacks per hectare (40-45 bu/ac) and that 60% of the soybeans will have yields in the range of 10-30 sacks per hectare (9 to 27 bu/ac). In the worst locations, the soybeans may not even be harvested.
The better farmers had hoped to harvest 70-75 sacks per hectare (62 to 67 bu/ac), but they now expect 30 to 35 sacks (27 to 31 bu/ac), but only if they receive additional rainfall this week.
Soybean harvesting will start approximately January 15th to January 20th and farmers will plant safrinha corn after the soybeans are harvested if there is adequate soil moisture. If the dry weather persists, there may be problems with the safrinha germination and emergence.
