Mato Grosso is the largest cotton producing state in Brazil and the cotton harvest in the state is expected to start this week according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea). The harvest is starting a little later than last year and farmers are expected to harvest 1.18 million hectares of cotton (2.91 million acres), which is up 18.6% compared to last year.

The first cotton to be harvested will be the full-season cotton that was planted in December. Approximately 13% of the cotton in the state is full-season and the full-season harvest will intensify during July. The safrinha cotton, which accounts for 87% of the cotton in the state, was planted in January and the harvest will start in July and intensify in August.

Localized frost that occurred during May in parts of southeastern Mato Grosso may trim cotton yields somewhat.

Conab estimates that the 2021/22 cotton acreage in Brazil increased 16.8% to 1.60 million hectares (3.9 million acres) and that cotton production will increase 19.2% to 6.91 million tons. The state of Mato Grosso will account for approximately 70% of Brazil's cotton production followed by the state of Bahia at 20%.
