Corn - The condition of the 2022 U.S. corn crop declined 3% last week to 61% rated good/excellent. Seven states indicated that the corn condition had improved last week and 11 states indicated the corn condition declined last week. Most of the improvements were found in the northern and eastern Corn Belt while most of the declines were found in the western and southern Corn Belt. The top five rated corn states are: Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. The five lowest rated corn states are: Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Kansas.

The corn in the northern and eastern Corn Belt benefited the most from the weekend rains. More rain is expected this week in the southern areas accompanied by seasonal temperatures. The longer-range forecast is calling for hotter and dryer conditions as we move into early August. If that forecast verifies, it would be a concern especially for the western and southwestern Corn Belt.

Soybeans - The condition of the 2022 U.S. soybean crop declined 2% last week to 59% rated good/excellent. Seven states indicated that the soybean condition had improved last week and 11 states indicated the soybean condition declined last week. Most of the improvements were found in the northern and eastern Corn Belt while most of the declines were found in the western and southern Corn Belt. The top five rated soybean states are: Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, North Dakota, and Louisiana. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Kansas.

The soybeans are entering their reproductive stage and after a brief period of improved weather, hotter and dryer weather is forecasted as we move into August. Declining soil moisture could result in moisture stress just as the soybeans start to fill pods.

Soil Moisture - The topsoil moisture declined across the country last week with 6 states indicating improved soil moisture, 11 states indicating lower soil moisture, and 1 state was unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the eastern and southern areas while most of the declines were found in the western areas. The five states with the best soil moisture are: North Dakota, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. The five states with the lowest soil moisture are: Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Mississippi.

Rainfall last week and over the weekend helped to maintain or even improve the soil moisture in parts of the northern and eastern Corn Belt. Rainfall this week should improve the soil moisture in the southern areas, but the soil moisture in the northwestern Corn Belt is expected to decline this week. The soil moisture continues to be below the long-term average.
