U.S. Corn Down 3% to 58% Gd/Ex, Soy Down 1% to 59% Gd/Ex

Corn - The condition of the 2022 U.S. corn crop declined 3% last week to 58% rated good/excellent. Four states indicated that the corn condition had improved last week, 13 states indicated that the corn condition declined, and 1 state was unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the eastern and mid-south areas while most of the declines were found in the central and western areas. The top five rated corn states are: Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota, and Pennsylvania. The five lowest rated corn states are: Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, and Colorado

The winning state last week was probably the state of Illinois that received several rounds of rainfall. Of the big producing states, it has now moved to the top of the list as far as the corn crop condition is concerned. The losing state last week was probably Nebraska due to the hot and dry conditions experienced last week.

Soybeans - The condition of the 2022 U.S. soybean crop declined 1% last week to 59% rated good/excellent. Seven states indicated that the soybean condition had improved last week, 10 states indicated that the soybean condition declined, and 1 state was unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the eastern and southern areas while most of the declines were found in the central and western areas. The top five rated soybean states are: Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Louisiana. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Kansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and North Carolina.

Weekend rains favored eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, and northern Illinois. The dryer areas of the western Corn Belt remained mostly dry last week and over the weekend.

Soil Moisture - The nation's topsoil moisture declined slightly last week with 9 states indicating improved soil moisture, 8 states indicating lower soil moisture, and 1 state unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the eastern and southern areas while most of the declines were found in the central and western areas. The five states with the highest topsoil moisture are: Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The five states with the lowest topsoil moisture are: Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and Missouri.

There was relief over the weekend in some of the northern areas of the Corn Belt, but it remained dry across most of the western and southwestern Corn Belt. Soil moisture in the eastern Corn Belt remains favorable. The forecast for the central U.S. calls for a return of hotter-than-normal and dryer-than-normal conditions.
