Nationwide, the 2022/23 Brazilian soybean crop was 0.1% planted as of late last week according to AgRural. This is approximately the same as last year. Brazilian farmers were allowed to start planting their 2022/23 soybeans last week and there were a few hectares planted in southern Brazil. In central Brazil, farmers were allowed to start planting soybeans last Friday and a small number of irrigated soybeans have probably been planted in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Sao Paulo.

Mato Grosso - Farmers in the state were allowed to start planting their 2022/23 soybeans as of last Friday. The first farmers to plant were those with irrigation. Farmers without irrigation are waiting for rainfall before they risk planting their soybeans. There were a few widely scattered light showers last week in Mato Grosso, but they were not heavy enough to convince most farmers to start planting their soybeans.

The forecast looks more promising for showers this week in Mato Grosso and the planting pace should pick up if the forecasted rains verify. October will be the main soybean planting month in Mato Grosso.

Parana - Farmers in Parana started planting their 2022/23 soybeans last week and according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral), less than 1% of the soybeans in Parana had been planted as of late last week. The planting pace should now start to accelerate in Parana.

Brazil farmers forward contracting - As of two weeks ago, Brazilian farmers ad forward contracted 16.2% of their estimated 2022/23 soybean production compared to 25.3% average according to the consulting firm Datagro.
