2022 U.S. Corn 20% Harvested, Soybeans 22% Harvested

Corn - The month of September ended on a dry note in much of the Midwest, which is good for a quick drydown of the corn, but it probably subtracted a few bushels from the later maturing corn.

Several other factors could have also hurt the corn yield in selected areas. A series of frosts earlier last week in some of the northern areas ended the growing season. There was probably only minimal damage from the frost, but it certainly did not add any bushes to the corn. Finally, Hurricane Ian made a second landfall in South Carolina last Friday with wind and rain impacting parts of South Carolina, North Carolina, and eastern Georgia. There will be some eardrop on the corn still in the field, which could also remove a few bushels.

The 2023 U.S. corn is 96% dented compared to 100% last year and 97% average. The corn is 75% mature compared to 86% last year and 75% average and the corn is 20% harvested compared to 27% last year and 22% average. The corn harvest pace is faster in the western Corn Belt and slower in the eastern Corn Belt.

The 2022 U.S. corn yield was left unchanged this week at 169.0 bu/ac and I have a neutral to slightly lower bias going forward.

Soybeans - The month of September was dryer than normal especially in Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota, and parts of Minnesota, Iowa, and Arkansas. The dry weather did not add any bushels and it probably resulted in smaller seed size in some of the later developing pods. It was also not a good end for the double crop soybeans in places like Arkansas and Missouri where the soil moisture is 70-90% short to very short. Hurricane Ian may have also caused some damage to the soybeans in South Carolina, North Carolina, and eastern Georgia.

The 2023 U.S. soybeans are 81% dropping leaves compared to 84% last year and 79% average. The soybeans are 22% harvested compared to 31% last year and 25% average. The pattern remains the same with the faster harvest pace in the western Corn Belt and the slower harvest pace in the eastern Corn Belt.

The 2023 U.S. soybean yield was left unchanged this week at 50.0 bu/ac and I have a neutral bias going forward.
